"I'm going to preface my review by stating this was the first year this race had a half marathon portion. The course is mainly on gravel or paved roads north of the college. It's a pretty course.
The course was fairly well marked until the last four miles. There was a turn off and 3 runners missed it and went off course for about a mile. There were 4 water stations throughout the course but were concentrated in the middle of the race. I think the last one was around mile 7.5 or 8.5. I would have appreciated on around 10 or 11.
I was also disappointed with the nourishment provided at the end. When I finished, the 5K and bike race were already finished and I saw a lot of people drinking vitamin waters. There were none left when I checked the coolers but found an unopened package. They also had bananas and orange slices. This would have been fine if I left right away but I stayed for the awards ceremony and started to feel a bit faint. So make sure to bring your own food if you are used to eating after you're done running. "

"This is a small, easy, kid-friendly, and fun race. It starts behind the hospital, goes down Chisholm past the Big Boy and back through the neighborhoods and brings you back on the bike path around the college. It is relatively flat, only a few slopes in the whole course. I think they had 1 water station and then fruit and water when you finished. A shirt is included in your race entry. Last year they were long sleeved cotton which was great because the majority of race shirts are short sleeved! They have a 1 mile run for the kids. The top three finishers in each age category get a medal. They also have a raffle in which every race participant is entered. Prizes included tickets to a University of Michigan football game. I can't remember what other things they had to give away but I remember thinking I wouldn't mind winning that for every item. There is also a bike race and tour. I think it is 20 miles. My parents have done the tour in the past and have really enjoyed. They are doing the race this year! I definitely recommend this race if you are in the Alpena area over Labor Day weekend and want to support a great memorial race."
