1 Reviews for CenturyTel WhistleStop Marathon

"Though I've clicked "no" for "would I do it again," doesn't mean I am not glad to have raced the WhistleStop Marathon. Maybe it is my intense love of trains and train lore that makes me fond of the race that was (oddly?) the toughest of the 8 marathons I've done in the last 3 years. Maybe it is that it is in WI, where you can pick up post-race micro brew beers (New Glarus Organic) in advance at a gas stations. Maybe it was the beautiful fall colors, the great town support, the SUPER organization for a small race. Dunno...it hurt and I was slower than hoped for....in fact I swore I'd never do another marathon during the last 4 miles.
Still, I'm glad to have done it and I'd actually recommend it under the following conditions:
1) Be prepared that it might be cold. In 2009 there was snow the night before and temps didn't top 35.
2) Be prepared for winds: Lake Superior can kick 'em up and the course isn't far from the lake. It is mostly sheltered, but no completely.
3) Don't make this your first marathon. Most racers will agree that marathoning is as much mental as physical and this course is a mental challenge. One line, one direction, no turns after mile 1.5 until mile 25. Lots of trees and not many spots for spectators.
4) Though not a trail run, this t'ain't no road race either. Be aware that you'll fight some sandy spots along the gravel covered old railroad bed
All things considered, the support is great. Water stops were frequent enough and well stocked. Where spectators could get to the trail, they were there and enthusiastic. Organization at the beginning and end was smooth and friendly.
And, there is a fish boil included with your complimentary pasta feed. Mmmmm chunks of fish and potatoes!"
