"Looking back, this was probably my ballsiest race entry. My tri record was 1 sprint and 1 long course, the latter missed due to an injury. Ah, but what the newbie doesn't know can't really hurt her!
The swim was in the pool at the "rec" center: darn nicest community pool I have ever seen let alone been a summer member of. Odd as it was, as a strong pool swimmer I kind of liked it. Our lane's 4 competitors had good camaraderie, but the large number of wave starts logistically required made it a bit lonely later on the course.
The bike ride up to the Maroon Bells is fantastic. Fantastically challenging that is. The views are amazing and I saw a deer and some other furry animal on the side of the road. If you aren't used to big ascents, just be prepared to curse your own name for miles.
The run was a much flatter experience, though it was then that I really felt out there by myself. The few spectators and the course marshalls were very cheery and encouraging.
When we loaded into the transition zone I noticed the fine gear and the finely sculpted bodies. With what I learned by the end of that race and until now, I suspect there were some very solid triathletes there for a fun and easy race.
Post race awards and lunch were super fun and though I was totally out of my league, most all the competitors were still chatting my friend and fellow racer up as one of the locals."
