"NOTE: This is actually an Olympic Distance race.
This is a FANTASTIC race! As long as the weather is nice, it's a beautiful day at the beach as well! Bridgeport, CT is a little bit of a sketchy area, but the race takes place at Seaside Park - a pretty nice beach. WEAR SUNBLOCK! or you will get burned. The bike is fairly shaded, but the run is not! (Can you tell I'm warning you from experience? :-) )
The swim is a beach start, and you actually run for about 100 yards before getting in the water, and there really isn't much surf to face once you get in. (Bridgeport is located in the Long Island Sound). The water temperature is nice enough that you don't need a wetsuit, but not so warm that you can't wear one.
The bike course is SUPER flat. It's a 5 loop, 8K course on the Seaside park roads. Half of it is newly paved, and the other half is a little bumpy. The road is fairly tree-lined, so coastal winds are pretty well blocked - there was very little wind. By far the fastest bike course I've ever ridden. The one thing you need to be careful about is riding 5 laps. You wouldn't think that counting to 5 would be so difficult! If you know about how long it should take you to complete the entire course, keeping an eye on your watch or bike computer will help. Having your supporters count for you and tell you when you need to turn in to transition could help too. Also, because the course is so short, race crowds are well distributed along the entire thing - lots of cheering and lots of encouragement!
The run course was equally flat, and runs on the boardwalk along the beach. Again lots of people along the length of the course, and plenty of aid stations.
Team Mossman manages the race, and does an excellent job. Great goody bags and post race food. Lots of fruit and cookies! Oh, the cookies... sweets never tasted so good. This is a perfect race for first time racers of all levels. The course isn't challenging, so if you're new to riding a bike and you hate climbing - no worries! :-)
