"This is one of those "you have to do in your lifetime" races, but NOT one if you are looking to set a P.R. or hate large crowds! At almost 45,000 participants, this is one crowded race. We stayed in downtown Charleston, and had to be on the shuttle buses very early, i believe aroudn 4:30 am was the LAST bus. There was a lot of waiting around. We were seeded towards the middle, and it still took us a good 15 minutes to reach the start after the gun went off. After the first two miles, you reach the entrance ramp to the bridge, where the crowd came to a complete stand still/bottleneck. You could not move. I'm sure if you were closer to the front you might have been able to keep up a good pace, but they were pretty strict with the seeding. And be warned, if you are towards the back, it seems NO ONE heeds the "no strollers" rule. There are tons of walkers, many with strollers. Other than that, the course itself is fantastic. Running over that massive bridge is just awesome and the view from the top unbelievable. ON the other side of the bridge the spectators were out in masses cheering you on, many with music blasting from car stereos. And many people came out to run in costume, which is fun! I have some great photos from this race. I'm glad I did it, it was a great experience, but not one I'd return to simply because the crowd is just incredibly overwhelming. "
