"This was my first olympic-distance triathlon and it was a fabulous experience. I trained with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, which made the experience even more memorable.
I would definitely recommend Escape from Ft. Delaware Triathlon (EFFDT) for first-time triathletes because it is a smaller race and the course is pretty flat. With smaller races, the swim is not as intimidating because athletes have more room to move around in the water (hence less kicking and splashing), particularly at the start of the swim. The one negative about the swim is that it is in the Delaware River (not the cleanest river). We swam from Ft. Delaware, which was a civil war prison, back to shore in between a power plant and a refinery. Wet suit strongly recommended!
The views during the bike portion are through the countryside, and there is only one major hill before the bridge - so make sure you take that energy shot.
Overall, race was well organized and check-in was the afternoon/evening before. "
