"I have done this race several times and always have a good time. The two things that I don't like much about the race is the rough chip seal road and "Lake Van" is kind of nasty but you can stand up at any point during the swim so it is excellent for a first open water swim for someone who is nervous about the swim or just a weak swimmer. As far as races in New Mexico go this is probably about the best first timer's race. If you make this your very first triathlon you will be recognized after the race and will get a nice mug. The awards are unique, ceramic milk bottles for age group awards and ceramic milk pitchers for the Cludesdales and Athenas."

"As a first time competitor at the Milkman Triathlon in Dexter NM I was very pleased with my experience. The community spirit that is often spoken of in the triathlon community is alive and well represented in this race. The organizers of this race should be given a great amount of credit for creating such an inviting atmosphere for the competitors.
The course - The race is organized around a small community park build around a very small lake; Van Lake in Dexter New Mexico.
The Swim - The lake is a swim friendly lake with a very shallow depth. Swimmers swim out from a pier around a single marker placed in the lake. The distance is 500M. Participants run out of the lake immediately into the transition area set on the lake shore.
The Bike - From what I was told the bike portion of the race has changed over the years. This years event featured an out and back bike ride on a county road leading away from the park. The road was a rough ride, but to be expected given the location. The route was a gradual up hill climb on the way out and a downhill ride back in.
The Run - The run was a mix of dirt trail and county roads around a local fish hatchery adjacent to the lake, and the lake itself. The route was very flat and made for an easy run and strong finish.
Overall - This was my second triathlon and a really great experience. I enjoyed the race and found it to be a fun and challenging race. The atmosphere was great. The race had strong competition and a good representation from different locations in the southwest. "
