"Great race. I love doing this every year. The swim is clean. The bike is rolling and challenging. The run can be a bear if the weather is hot. But it is always a great time."

"This is an excellent introduction to the Olympic Distance triathlon for relative novices as well as a solid race for veterans. The goal of the TrySports Triathlon Development Series set of events appears to give you all the distances without trying to kill you in the process by making the course profile and obstacles as tough as possible. In this regard, the swim is in a nice placid lake around the time of year in NC where you likely will get a wetsuit-legal swim but if you forgo it you won't freeze to death, the bike course is relatively flat except for one-third which is rolling hills, and the run course is mostly flat and in parts is shaded by trees and on packed earth instead of concrete. The intent is to give you the experience of racing an Olympic Distance and making it possible for you to succeed and encourage you to continue in other events. If you want a really rough Olympic Distance in NC, go for Bandit's Challenge -- also found at http://www.setup.com/ -- in the heat of early August. If you want a good, solid Olympic Distance early in the racing season to whet your appetite, definitely race Kerr Lake.
The organization of this race is very good and there was ample staffing at all the stations. The aid stations on the bike course only carry water, so bring your own Powerade/Gatorade/whatever. The aid stations on the run, although spaced adequately, are stocked with water and Heed only so if you like Endurolytes or Gu/HammerGels, carry your own out from the transition area. Elsewise, a top-notch event in terms of support, crowd, and nutrition at aid stations."
