"Cons first:
1. Only water on the course, you'd think they'd have a little electrolyte something something for a 1/2.
2. Ran out of water at one of the aid stations. "Sorry, we're out just get some at the next station." Maybe not that big a deal, unless you just sucked down a Gu and the next aid station is 2 1/2 miles away.
3. Horse Poop. Only bikes & horses are allowed on the island and when you have horses, so too you have poop & lots of it. Keep an eye out.
4.Packet pick up was on the island. You have to take a ferry that runs about $20 per person to get over there. Alot of runners stayed in Mackinaw City instead of on the island b/c it was cheaper. Would have been nice to have a packet pickup location somewhere off island too.
5. Not much by way of post race food. Bananas, water, that's all I saw, but maybe I missed it.
6. Medals in little bags. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Gosh darn it I just ran a 1/2 marathon. Open that sucker up and put it around my neck when I finish, it's just not the same if I have to do it myself. Most people won't.
7. There's not enough bathrooms. No port-a-potties anywhere and the lines at the start are massive (FYI: it's a chip start, so you can wait 'til the crowds thin out if you like & start after everybody). There are no bathrooms on course, supposedly we ran by a couple of locations of real actual bathrooms off the course somewhere, but I'm not familiar with the island and I totally missed it.
6. They needed some signs to let people know where the start for each of the races were. Nobody really seemed to know.
7.It's tight for the first few miles and it was kind of weird b/c the leaders for the 5.7 mile race were finishing where we were starting so they were basically running right at us.
PROS:
1. IT'S BEAUTIFUL. Despite all the cons (which are really just me nit picking), this was probably the prettiest course I've ever run on. It's just goregous. Some running is on the street right along the water, some is in the interior of the island, woodsy & trails, but it's really just so terrificly scenic. If you've never run it, especially if you're a Michigander like me, you've got to do it just once.
Other things to know:
1. Shirts (which were really nice fleeces) run big.
2. The course seemed far hillier than the elevation map. No idea why.
I'm putting not good for first timers b/c of the lack of aid, lack of bathrooms on the course, and it wasn't really that well marked, although I think it'd be tough to run off course. I was totally missing mile markers (they're on the ground written in flour). And of course because a first timer should CERTAINLY not have to medal themself."
