1 Reviews for Fleet Feet Aquathon Series Event 5

  (08-31-2009)
"I did 4 of the 5 Aquathons in the 2009 series. I will write a single review because the venue and race management does not change.
This 1,000 meter, triangular lake swim followed by a 5K run takes place at a small beach near Madison's Warner Park. The swim, in Lake Mendota is often in choppy waters. I'm not sure if this is because of the time of day, or bad timing, but only 1 of the races in this year's series would be safe to describe as having "calm waters". In fact, the final event of the season was in downright brutal conditions (lake chop).
The run course is fairly simple, mostly taking place on a path within Warner Park, with an appropriately placed water station at the halfway/turnaround point.
There is always a reasonable crowd on hand for an event that just 100 - 140 athletes typically register for. Race orgnization is superb. I don't know if it's overall experience, or the fact they (Race Day Events / Ryan Griessmeyer) or they have a chance to get this one right 5 times every year, but they simply do a wonderful job with this series. I think Ryan is a top-notch RD in this area. There are always plenty of volunteers, and the post-race spread for something so short and simply is quite impressive. On top of that, if you register for the entire series vs. individual raced, the cost is extremely reasonable.
I recommend this to anyone looking to get there feet wet in triathlon (sans the bike), or to use as solid training workouts for something a little bigger, like I did."
