"Most people might go to Montauk for the MightMan Half, which is the following day, but if you are looking for a less imposing distance, or just a warm-up for the big race, you should seriously consider this sprint. The course is excellent - swim in a (chilly) fresh water pond, bike out and back over a short hill, and then run around the pond on a flat 5K. Because this is the first of two races that weekend, the organizers have the incentive to invest in the infrastructure. More important, they get a solid corps of volunteers. This year, it rained hard for the entire race, but the course was fully staffed with cheering fans and volunteers guiding the athletes. Best part: someone must have realized that the racers would be cold and miserable at the end of the race, and that someone had access to chicken soup. Along with the usual bagels, bananas, etc., there was a steaming hot container of chicken soup, warm and salty, and just the thing my body needed after an hour and a half in the cold and wet."
