"This is a very fun course conisting of a 500 meter river swim, 18.9 mile bike, and 5k run. This year, the river was like a hot tub thanks to the lack of rain and heat wave. However, it was a downriver swim with the current (actually little to no current at all). I was actually sweating while swimming this year :). After the swim you exit with a short run to transition and the bike course is a false flat on the way out with a monster hill right before the turn-around. The good news is that the way back is mostly downhill or flat which makes for some fast riding! There is a small climb before a descent to the dismount. After a quick T2, comes the best part of this race. The 5k run is mostly a trail run and almost completely shaded. The run is fairly technical and requires some good navigation but is a blast!
This Tri offers a GREAT course and is a ton of fun. It also helped that I was 16th overall this year and grabbed 1st place in my AG.
Also, the post race food is GREAT (barbecue and vegetable pasta salad) "

"The swim at the Tavern this year was brutal against the current. The race organizers even shortened the course tto somewhere around 500 meters and it still took me 19 minutes to swim it and I can normally swimm 1000 in 20 minutes or so.
Otherwise, this was a fun race because the 18 mile bike course was challenging but fast and the 5K run course was a nice mix of trails and neighborhood roads.
I would certainly recommend this race along with all races that are put on by Laurie Mehler and the RMS (Richmond Multisports) team.
I beleive they are going to change the swim next year to go with the current."
