"Race: 1/9/2011
This race is one of many organized by DOLPHIN SOUTH END RUNNERS. They have races almost every weekend of the year and they are very reasonably priced. $5/entry fee!
This was a spur of the moment 10k that my wife and I decided to do in preparation for our upcoming 1/2 marathon and marathon.
The race began at JFK drive and Great highway. Parking was easy as we were about a 30 sec walk to the start. Registration was simple and volunteers were great and organized. The whole start atmosphere was relaxed as there was mingling and updates up until the nonchalant "readysetgo"
The course was good with some rolling hills. With an out/back course, there were equal ups and downs, but none too challenging. Although part of the road was open to traffic and cross traffic, there was minimal interference and volunteers patrolled the intersections well.
The finish was as low key as the start, but the few volunteers heartily cheered.
Post-race food/drinks included water, clementines, cookies, chips, grapes. Just a little of each, but enough for the 172 racers.
I spoke with a couple of DSE members after the race and both were very friendly and seemed like veterans of these low-key weekend races.
All in all, i was very pleased with the event as it exceeded all expectations especially at the $5 entry fee. I've raced worse races for 10x that amt. People were very friendly and there were runners of all experience levels to offer competitive motivation.
Note: no water stations in this 10k. Not that it is really needed for this distance, but if you are use to hydrating, remember to BYOW. Also no porta potties at the start, but again this was a low key event."
