"Downhill!! That is the best word to describe this race. The first half is almost all downhill. It has one gradual uphill in the second half, but the rest is pretty much flat. It is a beautiful run, and the weather would have been perfect if it had started on time. It started 45 mins late, but I heard it has started even later (up to 2 hours!!!) in the past.
There were aid stations at miles 3, 6, 8 1/2 & 11. Water was available at all; energy gel at 6 & 11; and a sports drink at 8 1/2 & 11. The volunteers were great and there were some spectators throughout almost the entire course.
The run goes down the canyon, past several parks and campsites. Some of my favorite smells along the way were campfire and cooking bacon and later when we got into the neighborhoods the smell of laundry drying. My least favorite was the off and on manure odor throughout the canyon.
The race is pretty crowded, so passing was difficult until amost four miles into the race. But the last mile is packed with cheering spectators! And there was a lot of food at the finish: watermelon, bananas, pretzels, grapes and sports drinks. They were out of water when I finished though =(
Overall, I think it was a good choice for my first half. It wasn't as well organized as some of the other races I have done, which was surprising since it is a longer distance and so popular, but I plan on doing it again!! "
