"The trouble with the Frozen Half Marathon is in the title. Sometimes, it is really frozen. The organizers put safety first and will adjust the course or call it off as needed. Fortunately for me, 2007 was a reasonably warm day and we ran the whole thing.
The start and finish are in downtown St. Paul. There is an indoor bag drop and waiting area, but the biffs are outside. It is an out and back along the river and there is really only one water stop, but you pass it twice. Since I was wearing a wind breaker I put an 6 or 8 oz water bottle in my pocket as hydration insurance.
The best part, or is it often the only good part? Well it was fun to see other runners coming at us, especially as we were out with a group from a club.
There is a nasty little hill as you turn off of the river area and back into the finish among the skyscrapers. Save a little bit for that.
The YMCA is open for changing and showers. There are lots of great post race breakfast joints (I recommend Day by Day on 7th). Instead of a shirt, you get a ceramic mug as your participant prize, though shirts are for sale benefiting the winter carnival organization too.
This is a great January goal to keep you training through the holiday season!"
