"Absolutely a must-run if you are an OSU fan, friend, or alum. This was my first year to run the race and I am ecstatic that I was able to participate. The race is put on in remembrance of the 10 members of the OSU basketball team who were killed in the 2001 plane crash in Colorado. I was a freshman in college at the time and remember the way it brought the whole campus together. This race brings the OSU family back together once agian.
The race is also a charity event to raise money for counseling services for current students who are affected by a loss in the family, terminal illness diagnosis of a family member, or any other life-changing event that may occur while they are studying at OSU. The participants are a great mix of current students, alumni, current OSU athletes, ex-athletes, and anyone else who "Remembers the Ten".
The race starts and ends at the steps of historic Gallagher-Iba Arena on the OSU campus. The race begins with a moment of silence for those who were killed and a quick word from Coach Eddie Sutton. Pistol Pete fires his gun and off the runners go around the football practice field, by Iba Hall, and back west down Hall of Fame. You pass almost every building of significance on the OSU campus as you wind your way through the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods. Being a former student, it was a great way to see how the campus has changed over the years and how it continues to progress. As I ran, vivid memories of my great times as an OSU student ran through my head and I even had a tear come to my eye as I remembered why I love my school. It's a race that makes you proud to be a Poke. I ran into many familiar faces from my college days and even met some new friends. We are all family at OSU and this race proves that even years after you leave, you can still go back and feel right at home.
The crowd for the race is better than I expected. There were people scattered along the course and the finish line corral was cluttered with people wearing OSU gear and cheering on the finishers. OSU also does a really great job of combining this race with other events that weekend. It usually coincides with the OSU spring football scrimmage and a home baseball series against a Big 12 opponent. You receive coupons for admission in your race packet, along with a license plate frame, a nice t-shirt, and plenty of other OSU-themed products. You also receive a souvenir time-chip and a very cool medal that depicts the statue placed on the crash site as a memorial to those who died.
I highly recommend this race and will make it an annual event on my calendar. I hope to see you in Stillwater next April."
