1 Reviews for Stinson Beach Marathon

"This was a challenging and beautiful course on the trails of Mt. Tamalpais. For reference, this was my third marathon and first full trail marathon, and we couldn't have asked for better weather. It starts off in the sand of Stinson Beach after a jovial pre-race meeting complete with instructions, announcements, jokes and singing. Then it's straight up the Dipsea Trail and Steep Ravine for about 4 miles of steady climbing. I'm so glad I did my weekly hill repeats in training! We had an abundance of lush switchbacks heading in and around Muir Woods. Every now and then there was a babbling brook or moss-covered bridge to cross, and at one point, a ladder! At times I would find myself running alone and stunned by the remarkable silence and peacefulness here. The trails were well marked and they had salty snacks, gatorade and water at the aid stations. I carried my own water so I didn't stop at all of the them. The rolling Coastal Trail along the ridge has stunning views of Stinson Beach and the Pacific Ocean, and is bordered with golden soft grass and the occasional dry scratchy thing. The marathon turnaround is an out and back on a singletrack, so you may have to stop occasionally for other runners or hikers, which gives you a chance to stop and enjoy the scenery. The final descent on the Matt Davis Trail back to the beach is quite steep, and there are several sets of trail stairs to change up the pace. The finish line is in the park next to the beach and is a great place to relax, go for a cold refreshing dip, have a picnic or rejuvenate at the cafes and restaurants of Stinson Beach before heading back home. I'm quite envious of the runners who live near these gorgeous trails, and hope to go back again soon. "
